• QUESTION: How do I analyse one or multiple QDF form(s) and export the content to a CSV file?

ANSWER: The command below analyses the data structure and content of one or multiple Snapform files (QDF) and exports the content to a CSV file with the proper structure and content. The first line of the CSV file will contain the names of the form fields. The QDF file is located in the <QDF file(s) path>. The output is stored in the directory specified as <CSV output path>.

Please note:

• Due to the flat structure of a CSV file, table contents cannot be exported to CSV.

• QUESTION: What are the QDF/s and QDF/a formats?

ANSWER: QDF (Quick Document Format) is Snapform’s own, XML-based document format. It consists essentially of the following five components:

• Reduced set of SVG to display background layouts and graphics
• Mechanism for embedding and replacing fonts
• Object layer with vector-based data entry components
• Data layer – represents data in a structured way
• Structured storing system for bundling and compressing elements and attachments into a single file

Together, these five components offer considerable advantages:

• QDF documents are preformatted logically and are therefore extremely compact
• Form fields and business logic are very compact and increase the document size by only a small percentage
• SVG-based background layer of the form provides printing formats in vector quality and guarantees complete transparency
• Snapform’s font replacement strategy enables platform-independent original representation of fonts, even if a font is not installed on the user’s computer
• Precise representation of a paper-based form layout on screen and in print allows this technology to be used in document-based workflows where both data and presentation are important
• Support for all current barcode symbologies (1D and 2D) reduces breaks in workflows and allows integration with existing legacy business applications
• Support for a wide range of text-entry methods (including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew and Arabic) allows global use of forms
• Snapform Viewer’s user interface is available in more than 30 languages and can therefore support general use with ease
• Snapform’s licensing model offers unrestricted, free use of Snapform forms. No additional software or services are required.

QDF can be formatted in compressed/encrypted form or as an open XML format:

1. QDF/S

QDF/S is the most thoroughly protected and compact variant of QDF. All components are compressed and encrypted (128 bit) and can be opened only with Snapform Viewer and correctly equipped server applications.

2. QDF/A
QDF/A is the ‘standard’ version of QDF, which discloses the data layer in XML format. This allows archive or document management software to access and manage completed Snapform forms without the need for additional tools.

• QUESTION: In a nutshell, what is the Snapform product suite?

ANSWER: Snapform is a comprehensive development suite for electronic form handling. It is ideal for any business that needs to input and collect customisable online data securely.

Snapform allows you to collect, input and process your essential customer data securely and efficiently using digital channels and traditional paper forms. The software is cross-platform compatible and suitable for any business process or workflow. It provides secure data exchange and easy integration with any DMS. Snapform comes with the completely free and easy-to-use Snapform Viewer for completion and submission of XML-based interactive electronic (QDF) forms.

• QUESTION: I want to find a solution to merge data into QDF templates provided by ESTV. What are my options?

ANSWER: There are two ways to do this:

1. QDF files can be saved in XML format (click ‘Save as’ in the File menu and select QDF/A as the format). You will then be able to change the content of the form using any XML editor. The new content will be visible when you reopen the form.

2. Snapform Commander allows you to perform this and other operations silently in the background using command lines (see attached PDF document).

The first option is, of course, free of charge. Snapform Commander is a licensed product and offers the advantage of a fully automated form completion and printing process, thereby eliminating the need for manual interaction. To find out more about Commander and to view our prices, click here.

• QUESTION: How do I prefill the Snapform forms with our own XML data?

ANSWER: With Snapform Commander, you can prefill forms or form templates with your own data. Snapform Commander performs common single, repetitive and combined tasks, such as mail merge, PDF generation, form prefilling, data extraction and output operations, silently in the background to XML or CSV. To find out more about Snapform Commander, click here.

• QUESTION: How do I print QDF files using a command line without having to start the Viewer application?

ANSWER: In Snapform Viewer Version 5.1.28 or later, you can convert a QDF file into PDF format in silent mode. Use the following command line for this purpose:

/pt “form path” “printer name”

This command prints the Snapform form specified as [form path] to a printer [printer name]. If the parameter [printer name] is omitted, it will print to a default printer. The printer name should be the same as that specified in Printers and Faxes.

Sample:

C:\SnapformViewer.exe \pt “C:test.qdf” “Brother HL-5040 series”

Command
This command exports the Snapform document specified as [form path] to a PDF file specified as [pdf file path].

/pdf “form path” “pdf file path”

Sample:
C:SnapformViewer.exe /pdf “C:test.qdf” “C:test.pdf”

• QUESTION: How do I register Snapform Commander?

ANSWER: To register Snapform Commander, use the command below. This action must be performed once per user profile on every device running Snapform Commander. Without a valid licence, Snapform Commander will run in demo mode and add a watermark to each document created.

Command
<path to commander.exe> -register <path to registration key file (.sfkey)> <name of license owner>

Sample
C:\SnapformViewer\viewer\tools\commander.exe -register “C:\John_Doe_Company.sfkey” “License owner”

• QUESTION: Is it possible to retrieve QDF field name from another QDF/A file?

ANSWER: The easiest way is to fill in the QDF form fields using Snapform Viewer, then to export the data (File/Export data) in XML format and import the data (File/Import data) to the selected form fields.

If you prefer a CSV file for import, you can use the QDF2CSV option (11.). The generated CSV file will show the fields in the header. However, CSV import is not suitable for forms containing tables; for these, you must use the XML option.

A Snapform Commander licence is required for this purpose.

• QUESTION: I can’t fill in the downloaded *.QDF form or even change my old one. What should I do?

ANSWER: The form designer determines the logic of Snapform (QDF) forms in Snapform Designer, and can create restrictions and rules on how to fill in the form (e.g. expiry dates). Before completing the form, make sure you read the form provider’s instructions on how to use and fill in the form. Always download the latest form directly from the form provider’s website or other specified resource.

You can easily export data from the old form (File/Export data) and then import it into the new form (File/Import data).

• QUESTION: Why is Snapform Viewer requesting me to download ‘the new release’ of the form?

ANSWER: The form designer determines the logic of Snapform (QDF) forms in Snapform Designer, and can create restrictions and rules on how to fill in the form (e.g. expiry dates). Before completing the form, make sure you read the form provider’s instructions on how to use and fill in the form. Always download the latest form directly from the form provider’s website.

You can easily export data from the old form (File/Export data) and then import it into the new form (File/Import data).

• QUESTION: The form is printed in the wrong paper format even though the printer settings are correct. What should I do?

ANSWER: Unfortunately, this was a bug in the older version of Snapform Viewer and has since been remedied. To ensure that Snapform Viewer runs correctly, make sure you install the latest version. You can download it here.

• QUESTION: How do I turn off automatic updates in Snapform Viewer?

ANSWER: There are two ways to turn off automatic updates in Snapform Viewer:

1. You can uncheck the item ‘Activate automatic update’ in the dialogue box (Options/Preferences).

2. In Snapform Viewer’s installation folder, you will see a file named [SFViewer.ini]. An entry [AutoUpdates = false] in this file will deactivate the automatic updates and block any changes to this setting. This option has been implemented recently, so make sure you download the latest version of Snapform Viewer to take advantage of it.

• QUESTION: Is Snapform compatible with 64-bit systems?

ANSWER: Yes, Snapform also runs on 64-bit systems – Find here the downloads

• QUESTION: What is the technical structure of the QDF format?

ANSWER: QDF (Quick Document Format) is Snapform’s own, XML-based document format. The file consists of multiple layers (e.g. for metadata, data and business logic; the business logic layer is encrypted), which allow, for example, the QDF file information to be accessed using a text editor.

The file content structure is as follows:

<QDFA version=”1.5.1″ xmlns:xsi=”http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance” xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=”https://www.snapform.com/open_format/snapform.xsd” xsi:rdf=”https://www.snapform.com/open_format/rdf.xsd”> <Data>
<snapform>

<values>
<value name=”Mk003″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk002″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk005″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk004″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk001″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk000″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk007″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk006″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk009″ type=”3″></value>
<value name=”Mk008″ type=”3″></value>
</values>
</snapform>
</Data> QlpoOTFBWSZTWSEloUcAAL1////////////3////8/////////////73/f/u/Pv/////4AffedNUkAW5vZ47nei0KwB1BlImp6FGFNiR …. </QDFA>

It is therefore easy to modify or prefill a QDF form using external tools and processes.

Another representation of the QDF file format resembles an HTML file. In this case, the form components are referenced by URLs or paths. When the QDF is opened in Snapform Viewer, the components are downloaded and put together on an ad hoc basis:

<QDFA>
<Keywords Url=”https://www.snapform.com/temp/keywords.txt”/>
<Metadata Url=”https://www.snapform.com/temp/meta.xml”/>
<Data Url=”https://www.snapform.com/temp/toURL.xml”/>

</QDFA>
